“Having an education is one thing, being educated is another.” ~ Lee Kuan Yew (the Prime Minister who created the first educational blueprint for Singapore’s junior college system.)
The Junior College (JC) was created to provide Singaporean students with a challenging environment to develop their talents, both academically and non-academically, throughout a rigorous two-year pre-university education programme. In Singapore, a JC is perceived as the key that unlocks the doors to University education. When compared to other post-secondary educational choices, the Junior College is often considered to be the direct path to a university.
Junior Colleges adopt a lecture-tutorial system that serves as an introduction to tertiary education. This drives the development of independent learning and self-discipline in students.
In most cases, students enter Junior Colleges after completing 4-5 years of academic studies at a Secondary School (the equivalent of high school) and obtaining good grades for their GCE ‘O’ levels examinations. After successfully graduating from JC, they have a 95% chance of securing a place in Singapore’s local universities. To obtain a recognised bachelor’s degree from the top three universities in Singapore – National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University, or Nanyang Technological University – the emphasis is placed on obtaining good results in the GCE ‘O’ levels.
“Junior College study is not exactly for everyone; students with excellent academic grades from their GCE ‘O’ levels leaving examination are specially selected before they are allocated into different junior colleges.”
For two years, students go through similar learning programmes like that of Secondary Schools. The only difference is that the standard and level of difficulty of each subject is higher and more demanding at Junior College.
A student dedicates two years of his or her life towards pursuing an A-level certificate. This involves digesting large amounts of advanced content that must be absorbed during a short period. Two paths are open for students pursuing their education in Junior College:
The sad truth is that some students who are not able to cope up with the tremendous pressure of Junior College end up in a university overseas or applying to a local polytechnic mid-way through their course of study in JCs.
Proper guidance is thus vital for a student’s progress in Junior College. Aiming to address the pain points commonly experienced by JC students, ChampionTutor has thus curated a pool of highly experienced and qualified teachers who provide 1-to-1 JC tuition for all subjects - including GP, H1/H2 maths, sciences, and more – to maximise a student’s chances of earning a place in an elite university after their GCE A-Level
Students get overwhelmed upon joining Junior Colleges due to the vast difference in the standards encountered in Secondary Schools. Moreover, JC1 students have to cope with mother tongue languages and their Project Work (PW), which is intensely time-consuming.
By hiring a private JC tutor, students get a platform to learn in a more effective and efficient manner:
