    Experience :

I taught one-on-one tuition for a year, 3 students in total. The first student i had under my wing came to me for help in English, as she usually didnt get past a C for this subject. I looked through her past compositions and noticed she had more than a few errors as she did not really grasp the concept of grammar and prepositions. Thus, i gave her practice on these few topics n taught her how to use them correctly in a sentence. Other than that, she was very shy and did not open up too much during oral exams. We then practiced one-on-one conversations n i told her to include descriptions, personal examples and opinions if she couldn’t think of what to say. By the End-Of-Year exams, her English grade jumped to a B and i was proud of her because her grade was super close to an A and i encouraged her to keep working hard towards that A! The two other kids i had needed help in Mathematics. One was weak in the subject while the other just needed some supervision and extra practice because he tended to be distracted during classes but was a fast learner. Since these two kids were obviously very different in what they needed help in, i had separate teaching methods for each of them. The first student had trouble understanding the basics so I let her do some practices for each topic and  described how to use the different mathematical methods to solve each question. This way, she was exposed to different types of questions and knew which method to use for a particular question. She improved from a B to an A by mid-year exams. As for the other student, i just needed to get him to focus on his homework and i briefly explained the topics he was currently being taught in school. He caught on really quickly and was soon able to finish all the questions given to him by the teacher. He passed his class tests with flying colours and even said that his teacher was very impressed by his results. When my kids show improvement, i usually reward them with a little gift to encourage them to keep up the good work.
